With the major developments in our understanding of genetics, we now have the ability to screen humans and other organisms for specific alleles, transfer alleles (and therefore characteristics) from one species to another and to customise the medical drugs that are prescribed to patients. All of these advances come with benefits and risks.
It is important that you understand by the end of this unit…
- What genetic screening is and how it can be used.
- How genetic engineering works and why we would want to use it.
- What personalised medicine is.
- The benefits and risks of using gene technology.
